- How much eSIM data do I need for a one-week trip?
- For most travellers, 3–5 GB covers a week of maps, messaging and light social use. If you scroll video-heavy feeds daily or share a lot of photos, plan for 7–10 GB. If you stream HD video or tether a laptop, you're looking at 20 GB or more — or an unlimited plan. The calculator above turns your own habits into a number, then finds the cheapest plan across 5 providers that actually covers it.
- How much data does one hour of video use?
- Roughly 700 MB in SD (480p) and about 2.5 GB in HD or 4K. Short-video apps like TikTok and Reels sit around 500 MB per hour, which surprises people because it feels lighter than "watching a film". Video calls run near 800 MB per hour. The table above lists typical per-hour figures for every common activity.
- Do maps use a lot of data?
- No — turn-by-turn navigation is one of the cheapest things you can do, around 20 MB per hour. What actually costs data is browsing the photos, reviews and venue pages inside the maps app. Downloading offline maps over Wi-Fi before you leave removes even that.
- Is it cheaper to buy one big plan or several small ones?
- Usually one plan that covers the whole trip, but not always — some providers price mid-size bundles disproportionately, and occasionally two smaller packs beat one large one. The calculator checks both routes and tells you when a multi-pack combination is genuinely cheaper, including the total checkout price.
- Should I just buy an unlimited eSIM?
- Only if you'll genuinely use heavy data every day, and only after reading the fine print. Almost every "unlimited" travel eSIM applies a fair-use policy: you get a set amount at full speed each day (often 1–3 GB), then get throttled — sometimes to speeds where video stops working. We currently index 438 unlimited plans and label them as unlimited, but the daily full-speed threshold is set by each provider, so check their plan page before buying. For light and moderate users, a metered plan is almost always cheaper.
- How accurate is this calculator?
- The data estimate is a planning figure, not a measurement — per-hour usage varies with app, video quality, network and background sync, so we round up rather than down. The prices, however, are real: every plan comes from the provider's own feed and is refreshed daily (currently as low as US$0.24 per GB). We never estimate or generate a price.
- Will I be charged roaming fees on top?
- No. A travel eSIM is a prepaid local data plan, not roaming — you pay the plan price and nothing else. Keep your home SIM's data switched off so your phone can't fall back to it, and keep your regular number active for calls and texts.
